“The Faces I Know” is a captivating collection of high-contrast, colorful portraits celebrating the humanity and diversity of Black Americans, spanning ages 2 to 90. Each portrait is thoughtfully crafted to reflect the deep connections individuals share with their beloved pets, creating a powerful narrative of love, companionship, and identity.
Complementing these portraits are vibrant mixed media abstract works that enhance the color play and high contrast, enriching the overall experience of the exhibit. Additionally, black mixed media paintings feature bold text derived from the image prompts, layered on top of solid black paint, inviting viewers to reflect on the stories behind each piece.
This exhibit invites viewers to explore a unique blend of art and technology, where AI-driven techniques merge with personal stories and cultural significance. Through these images and accompanying works, I aim to challenge perceptions of Black identity and highlight the beauty and humanity found in everyday life within the Black American experience. While the images are not of actual lives lived, they evoke a sense of familiarity that invites viewers to connect with the subjects as their eyes stare directly back at them. The vibrant, high-contrast colors strike a powerful mood, boldly taking up space and asserting their presence, unashamedly being here and being seen.
As you navigate this exhibit, you’ll find not only a showcase of art but also a celebration of vibrant existence and the profound bonds we share with our pets. “The Faces I Know” serves as a tribute to the richness of Black experiences, challenging viewers to engage with the beauty and depth of humanity reflected in each portrait.
